A recent sermon at church focused on how the daily, ordinary choices of life prepare us for the larger challenges and "assignments". Just as Mary's daily communion with her loving God prepared her to receive the invitation to be the mother of Jesus, our daily choices prepare us to say "yes" to whatever may come in our future. My daily taking time to pray and surrender my life, my emotions and to enter into relationship with a loving God, compounds into peace, joy and a greater sense of direction and purpose in my life.
Military personnel understand this concept of compounding choices very well. Their very survival depends upon it. Eating healthy is one simple, sometimes unexciting, choice at a time. My green smoothie, veggie stir fry, or whatever healthy choice I am making at the time to nourish my body, may not seem all that exciting or appear to be making a big change in my health. I may feel some discouragement that passing on the cookies or candy at a gathering only seems to be a denial and not a positive choice which is building toward my greater health. But add up all the calories, chemicals, fat or sugar I am avoiding, and it will quickly be apparent that my body is better off without all this garbage. For a few weeks this Christmas, I made the choice to indulge in these treats and it did not take long to see the compounded effects of weight gain and a sluggish body. I am grateful to be back to my better choices.
Look at any person who you admire and believe is making a difference in the world and you will see many ordinary, unexciting choices that are strung together, like links in a chain, or bulbs in a string of Christmas lights. Put together on a daily basis and you have strength, beauty and extraordinary achievements.
May you embrace the ordinary in your own life and see it as the way to build toward an extraordinary future of peace, meaningful relationships, greater health and financial blessing. May the coming year bring moments when you see more clearly your extraordinary contributions to the world.
