Did you know...
- components in aspartame turn to formaldahyde when heated (i.e. in a warm body)?
- serious side effects, such as ADHD, nausea, migranes, have been consistently linked to aspartame?
- asparatame and other artificial, chemical sweeteners are linked to heart disease?
- there is a direct correlation between artificial sweeteners and weight gain (not weight loss)?
- aspartame use has been linked to Pseudo MS symptoms in women?
The internet is loaded with articles, scientific studies and other summaries of the damage done by artificial sweeteners. My purpose in this post is to share a few sources for you to check out, to raise awareness and to offer some better options.
Dr. Mercola is one source that I find helpful for a quick, easy, yet scientific summaries. Here are a few quotes from his website, www.mercola.com.
In humans, the methyl alcohol travels through your blood vessels into sensitive areas, such as your brain, that are loaded with ADH, which converts methanol to formaldehyde. And since there's no catalase present, the formaldehyde is free to cause enormous damage in your tissues. Symptoms from methanol poisoning are many, and include headaches, ear buzzing, dizziness, nausea, gastrointestinal disturbances, weakness, vertigo, chills, memory lapses, numbness and shooting pains in the extremities, behavioral disturbances, and neuritis.
The most well known problems from methanol poisoning are vision problems including misty vision, progressive contraction of visual fields, blurring of vision, obscuration of vision, retinal damage, and blindness. Formaldehyde is a known carcinogen that causes retinal damage, interferes with DNA replication and may cause birth defects. Not surprisingly, the most comprehensive and longest human study looking at aspartame toxicity found a clear association between aspartame consumption and non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma and leukemia.
Recently, I heard the personal testimony of a woman who at the age of 23 was diagnosed with MS. He had debilitating MS like symptoms, such as drooping face, visual disturbances, fatigue and muscle loss and began taking the prescription medications recommended by her doctor. It wasn't until she saw an article on the internet about Pseudo MS symptoms in women who use aspartame and other artificial sweeteners, that she realized this might be an issue for her. She had been addicted to Diet Coke, drinking it three times a day. She simply eliminated all foods and drinks with artificial sweeteners and and within two weeks all her MS symptoms disappeared. 13 years later the symptoms have never returned.
I found this study which showed reversal of pseudotumor cerebri symptoms by eliminating artificial sweeteners.
Young Living provides an all natural Stevia extract which offers a good option for a low glycemic sweetener with few calories and no side effects. Stevia is a plant whose leaves are naturally sweet and, like all of their products, is processed so all the health benefits are still intact and nothing harmful is added.
